We will begin the school year reviewing kindergarten common core math skills and learning how to do math centers.
Once we get going, our daily math time will consist of a 20 minute whole group lesson and 15 minutes of calendar and math wall. Three days a week we will have 45 minutes of small group math instruction and the other 2 days will be math games or longer whole group time. Our whole group lesson will come from Everyday Mathematics. At the beginning of each unit I will send home a family letter which will let you know what we will be covering. We will be using a math tool called a Reckenreck to help us develop number sense and learn how to add and subtract. You can Google Reckenreck to see what it looks like and see videos of one in use. It is an amazing tool and the kids love using them!(Half day schedule-20 minutes daily whole group math/no small group math)
Things to practice at home:
-Reading and writing numbers to 100.
-Counting by 2's to 20, and by 5's and 10's to 120. (This is an easy one to do in the car).
-Knowing combinations of 5 (Ex: 3 and 2 or 4 and 1) and later in the year combinations of 10 (9 and 1 or 5 and 5).
**There is no nightly homework in math in first grade. I will occasionally send home things to do or skills to practice. Those assignments are always do within one or two days. **
There are also many free apps to practice math concepts:
- make 10plus
-number flash
-coolmath games
