Our school is in it's 2nd year of using a language arts program called: EL Open up. There are 4 modules in first grade which will be our units of study. You will see the modules listed on our monthly calendar. Your first grader will work with the EL program for 30 minutes a day plus some lab time each month. (Half day schedule-20 minutes daily) For our phonics instruction we use a program called: Fundations. This program provides the skills to help build your child's ability to read fluently and spell first grade appropriate words. Every child will receive 30 minutes of Fundations whole group instruction daily and some students will receive additional time during small group instruction. You will receive a parent letter at the beginning of each unit to inform you what we are working on and ways you can help at home. (Half day schedule-20 minutes daily) Small group literacy centers take up 60 minutes of our day. 15 of those 60 minutes is spent receiving on level reading instruction from myself. Children may also receive additional reading support from title one or an instructional tutor during that time based on their needs. (Half day schedule-20 minutes daily) |
Things to do at home:
1. Read EVERY night with your son or daughter.
2. Practice the 'trick' words at least twice a week.
-Write your trick words in sand, snow, or shaving cream.
-Have a grown up hide your trick word cards around the house and when you find them you have to read them and spell them aloud to your grown up. How fast can you find them all?
-Play memory with your trick words.
-Play tic-tac-toe. You can only put and X or an O if you can read the trick word in the box.
-Spell your trick words with magnetic letters or with playdough.
